Integrating traditional martial arts and dance

Dr. Gitanjali Kolanad, Professor, Department of Art Design and Performing Arts (SoHSS), was awarded the Writer-in- Residence under the 2016 Singapore Creative Writing Residency Programme jointly organized by the Arts House and the National University of Singapore (NUS).

Dr. Gitanjali Kolanad has been involved in the practice, performance, and teaching of bharata natyam for more than 40 years. The author of two books as well as numerous articles on aspects of Indian culture, Dr. Kolanad co-founded IMPACT – Indian Martial and Performance Arts Collective of Toronto, which teaches the Indian martial art form of Kalaripayat to at-risk youth. At Shiv Nadar University, Dr. Kolanad teaches courses in the department of Arts, Design and Performing Arts at the same time developing a performing arts program.
